Founded in 1997 by Dr. Anthony Marini, Ottawa based Martek Assessments Ltd. provides assessment services to examining boards and regulatory bodies across Canada and is committed to applying best practice principles to a wide range of assessment processes, including entry level exams and on-going continuing competency. Our belief is that a commitment to fairness for all stakeholders best achieves the goal of an assessment that is fair, valid and defensible.

Dr. Anthony Marini Ph.D,

President

Dr. Anthony Marini has been involved in educational measurement and assessment since 1987. He held the position of Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education, University of Calgary from 1987 to 2008. During that time he taught courses in testing and assessment at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In 1997, he created Martek Assessments Limited, a consulting company providing services in the areas of licensure examinations, quality assurance assessment for ongoing competency requirements in the health care professions, and consultation to a variety of institutions around fair and defensible assessment processes. 

 

His most extensive work has involved the Ontario College of Pharmacists and their Quality Assurance Program, which was first implemented in 1996. Dr. Marini played a key role in the conceptualization, development, implementation and refinement of this program. Along with his colleagues, he has published extensively on the program’s implementation and impact on participants. 

 

Dr. Marini has been an invited speaker at both national and international conferences, including the 2015 Keynote address at the CLEAR conference in Boston and the 2013 CLEAR International Conference in Edinburgh, to speak about Continuing Competency Programs.

 

Additionally, Dr. Marini was the 2014 keynote speaker at the ORAC (Ontario Regulators for Access Consortium) Learning Day where he presented on “Assessing Competency” from entry level through ongoing professional practice. Dr. Marini was also an invited speaker sponsored by the Ontario Office of the Fairness Commissioner entitled ‘Transforming Access Forum: Challenging our Assumptions about Competency’ with a focus on internationally trained health care professionals. Finally, he presented on ‘Linking Competency Assessment and Continuing Professional Development’

at the 2014 Ontario College of Teachers conference: ‘Inspiring Public Confidence.’

Dr. Marini will be presenting at the CLEAR conference in Denver in September 2017. 

 

In addition to his work in educational measurement and assessment, Dr. Marini has played an active role in faculty development at both the University of Calgary and since 2008, at Carleton University where he is senior faculty developer. For his efforts in promoting teaching excellence at the university level Dr. Marini was awarded the 3M National Teaching Fellowship in 1997, the most prestigious teaching award in Canada.

Matthew Marini B.A.(Hons), J.D., PME Assessment and Evaluation

Vice-President

Matthew Marini has been involved with Martek Assessments Ltd. since 2006. While working part-time with the firm, Matthew completed his Bachelor of Arts with High Honours in Philosophy, minoring in Psychology and Law, from Carleton University in 2011 before earning his Juris Doctor from the University of Calgary Faculty of Law in 2014. 

Following his call to the Bar of Ontario in 2015, Matthew began working with Martek Assessment Ltd. full-time and in the spring of 2020 earned a Professional Masters of Education (Assessment and Evaluation) from Queen's University. 

Matthew's principal work with Martek Assessments Ltd. entails all aspects of the development and implementation of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) with an emphasis on case and scoring system development, as well as exam scoring and reporting services. Matthew also manages web-based test item banks facilitating the development and administration of on-line remote proctored written examinations.

 

In addition, Matthew has been involved with numerous cut-score setting (standard setting sessions) for a variety of examining boards for multiple choice and OSCE formats and frequently facilitates OSCE assessor training sessions.
